Welcome to Sarajevo. To-day is Friday.

19 Oct

(Lounce again.)
(Outside.)
We stand together, separated by a thick sheet of humid, October, southern air. He smokes. And then I say: “I know about Sarajevo and Belgrade. I know what happened to your crew.”
“You do?”
“I covered that. In and out. And out and in.”
“Yeah.”
“It wasn’t big news, you know.”
“I know.”
“Regional stuff for language services.”
“You were USIA?”
“Yea. A kid really. Didn’t know much about much. Small-time CN story, though. That’s why they assigned it to me.”
“I know,” he says.
And then nothing. For ten minutes we stand and listen to raindrops sneak through trellises, and slap down against the red brick pavers. He inhales and lets out big sighs punctuated by blue smoke. Then I leave. And he stays to light up another.
