On Muses

26 Dec

i don’t believe in them.
never have.
they’re medusa.
they’re succubi slithering down ceiling fans at night
trying to steal your breath;
your sentences.
i believe in me.
some days i can and
some days i cannot.
but muses
they’re melancholic and
bad greek fiction.
i don’t believe in the moon
or the sun or venus
or…tides, waves, oceans, seas.
there’s no one around to help when i really need it;
just the stories and
just the words;
a few dead souls:
bukowski, papa, fante, celine, mahler, ludwig, miles…
a handful of cats
two clean glasses of whisky,
an underwood.
and that’s it.

    I hope you believe in cats with an extra toe. Papa did.

    I don’t believe in the muse as well. Count me in for hard work and discipline. If you fail. Begin again. If you win. Begin again.

    Very well written poem that teaches at the same time and enlightens.
    Kindest,
    Michael

    Thanks all. I try not to put too much of this stuff on the site anymore; I used to in the past, but these pieces are not necessarily favorites and aren’t too well-developed. But I’m happy if they resonate with people.

    Well-written. Personally, muses are neither my friends nor foes. But I think they do exist. :)

    Oh, there are muses…..for those that don’t believe in them…you just haven’t met yours yet……
