indolence and pork rinds

9 Jan

sometimes i connect them to the insomnia.
it’s a savage form of intellectual idling
brought on by tangential issues and worry.
and as i sit at the machine at this early hour
with a thimble of cold whisky
there is an avalanche of books in the adjacent room.
words slide off the pages and mix in a cauldron of paste
slush
bile
anger
beauty
salvation
and death.
i’ve freed the monsters from the trees;
i’ve plucked a seraphim from the celestial hierarchy
of phantoms and myth.
what order are you from?
archangels, principalities, dominion, thrones, cherubim…
he doesn’t answer.
it’s all a ruse to keep me up.
i try again to lie down
and give up finally.
i turn on lights. start the coffee machine.
open books.
close them.
stand. sit.
and stand again.
thirty-five feet up
an agitated man is suffering.
i see him through a frosty window
across the parking lot.
he puts his lips on glass and blows.
and leaves a print from body heat
which fades away;
it’s wiped by fog and chill.
the factory across the river blows
end of third shift.
(quote-unquote)
morning is broken.

This was wonderful. Deja vous… sleepless nights that felt unreal and as awkward as your dreams, but your mind still won’t let you sleep. Awesome.

Cool and the Gang. Thanks. Glad to know other people are as tortured as I am. Shine on you crazy diamonds.

Was up at 2:30 this morning…should’ve gone online and read this- would’ve felt better about all that. Instead I stayed there and got pissed off. Because that really helps.
