who cares

21 Jan

hey watch it, watch it!
this happened, i don’t know…Carlton Street and Jarvis maybe.
or maybe a bit further up, by the maple leaf gardens.
nothing doing, nothing to write home about,
just a normal, anonymous collision of numb flesh with terra firma
in some city in some country on some continent.
we were walking to Yonge and he came at us hobbling on his only leg.
he was soused and burnt by the northern summer sun and dirty;
he was carrying a bag of oranges, which severely affected his balance;
pulled him down with impunity suddenly
while he tried to steady himself on a wooden crutch.
coming at us, he began to fall like a redwood collapsing from wisdom
or with wisdom;
and as he succumbed to whiskey and gravity
he said something to us; first looking at me, then at her.
i don’t know what it was; we were coming straight at him but we were too far;
too far to buttress him or at least let him down easy.
hey watch it, watch it!
a young man with sunglasses yelled as the vagabond collapsed
and imploded at the same time, somehow.
a bag of pliable bones re-shuffled and re-arranged.
by the time we got to him to help, he was out from the juice raging through his veins.
nothing doing, nothing to write home about.
pedestrians walked by trying not to spit down content or disgust or
just nothing.
white space.
i recall saying something stupid like are you all right?
then i pulled and tugged and propped him against the facade of a building.
and like the others,
left him alone.

    Ah, but by helping him, by propping him up, he was not left alone. And that, in its small way, is a very good thing, a good deed, that someone did care — that much.
