Julian Schnabel Smokes

23 Feb

schnabelsmokes
some days i feel like taking a blade to those gigantic canvases
and shredding them from the frames;
i want to hate this man because he’s pompous
and large
and knows he’s good
only
he is good
he is brilliant at making films and art
and he is brilliant at saving my life
every time i’ve needed him to save it.

he is King Henry VIII—
(only twice married)
a glutton tearing into a large fire-roasted animal leg
with his powerful jaws;

in one weird sequence, he is falling from the sky perpetually,
attached to a raft made from logs
into an ocean infested with sharks.
i watch this from behind a wooden fence;
still a boy, but smoking a Marasesti filterless cigarette.

    Alex, you had me at “Julian Schnabel.” Now I need to read the words.

    You watch as he turns the sharks into poetry. And what he creates with that poetry — we need to view it to fully understand, and then view it again, because we don’t fully understand (yet).

    I’m the little boy you see, but one fence over. Not smoking like you, but both hands on the wood, looking out with amazement and awe.

    Hi Geoff, glad you like him; he’s a tough one to like, but he works for me.

    He was lovely on Elvis Costello’s show with Lou Reed. If you get the chance and haven’t seen it, check it out, yo. http://www.sundancechannel.com/series/spectacle

    With a quickness you are able to slice with your words. I love that his ear is purple.
