documenting the demise of the great american empire from the road (1)

somewhere on rt. 61 in missouri
we stopped at the steak-n-shake
valeriu bought a postcard
and i got the patty melt for $2.95
he smoked
and i spiked my coke with rum
we watched a tumbleweed roll across the front lot
he wrote back home in flowery penmanship
having a time
wish i wasn’t here
we found fifteen cents in the glove compartment
and tacked on a stamp
when you decide to go on the road
and write about it
i think it’s best you start somewhere in the middle
close to the heart of the thing

i too have visited a stead-n-shake on rte 66 at night. it was down the street from my apartment. and this is pretty much what it felt like. even back in illinois. nice piece. i like it.
