badlands

21 Apr

we travel like weird savages
unkempt unrepentant unfaithful to the road
ducking down gravel throughways
into dingy motel rooms used by hourly customers
we heat up squares of pasta filled with ground up meat out of cans
on a portable electric hot plate
sitting on the dirty shag carpet
watching meaningless ball games on the blue-green screen
waiting out violent storm clouds plowing through Norman, Oklahoma
Tucumcari, New Mexico
Kingman, Arizona
this part of the country in this part of the year is brutal
the vegetation tries to poke you stab you hinder you kill you
we need water
we piss into the radiator
we break down in Death Valley
and at one point we’re joined by a stray wild desert dog
who sits down next to us in a show of transient camaraderie
while we try to flag down someone
and then he leaves suddenly and forcefully
smelling the death and decay that surrounds our doomed fate
one day (Valeriu says) we’ll do this again only we’ll take a train across
and sit in the bar car working on rusty nails
one day

Awesome. And then it ends with rusty nails. More awesome.
