my father when he dies
will die just like everyone else
and then he’ll be dead
and so will i
and so will everyone
there is nothing melancholic about death
it’s an abstraction
we can kill but we do not know what happens after

the last we saw Popa the playwright was at the coffee shop
in Bucharest
i played backgammon with a patron
while my father had coffee and talked with his friend
and then Popa disappeared
and we never heard from him again
how they got you was:
the government informed the writers’ union
of an invitation to Paris to attend lectures on existentialism
all editors of newspapers
writers intellectuals novelists essayists even cartoonists
got on a large bus
which was to take them across the border into Hungary
from where they were to board a charter and fly into DeGaulle
the bus left at midnight and by 2 or 3 everyone was asleep
one of them woke to find the driver gone the bus stopped near a ravine
the plan was for government agents
to push the bus down the side of the mountain
while everyone was asleep make it look like an accident
but something got botched
and instead they sent black government cars with armed agents
they hustled everyone off the bus
and shot them in the head

i’ve been having a hard time lately thinking of oppression by closed-society governments vs. oppression by The Corporation or The Financial System or Wall Street in “open societies” or capitalist countries. it’s difficult living in between two evils.

I see you have something new, I have to read it. I read it, I always enjoy it.
