The Man Who Wasn’t There

11 Jul

it seems i advance behind a smoky curtain of etiquette
or rather there is the illusion of progress
i may very well be standing still while fog obfuscates the scene
i do not care about leaving footprints in the snow or sand or ash
there is no legacy that i can leave behind
that can possibly mean anything to anyone
legacies get buried by history
and history keeps getting tweaked by melancholic scribes
and read and taught down the line by willing believers
we live now in a virtual room 101 where O’Brien holds up four fingers
and we see what he wants us to see
and we truly believe it

i think i was born
in order to be erased
like so many of those men
in Stalin’s photos
