From Beneath the Earth

24 Aug

madness from beneath the earth
comes across my wires at two in the morning:
Chilean miners trapped underneath a mile of rock
are heard singing the national anthem through a dug up rescue shaft
madness abounds wrapped in patriotism wrapped in flags
the electronic timeline buzzes with details:
trapped miners’ rescue operations to take months
meantime they’re sending up letters to family to loved ones
one of them writes: can you imagine
after thirty years of marriage
we will start sending each other love letters again

messages from beneath the earth usually come in the form of eruptions
requiems for geological strata
violent announcements of new locations for tectonic plates
not love poems not soft words
madness from beneath the earth
comes in all forms
one day those men will be able to tell their grandchildren
that decent human beings doomed inside a mine shaft for months
a mile under the paved streets of Santiago
locked arms and bellowed the Canción Nacional
in a defiant show of camaraderie against nature
madness abounds with the human spirit
and I am safe on my couch reading it all

i really hope they all come out ok

last i heard it had been decided that they wouldnt tell them how long it will take for rescue…this broke my heart but i fully understand why they would do this
