left jab

8 Sep

i do roadwork
the week before 32 miles were logged
for some reason Gerry Cooney came to mind
around mile 4 or 5 yesterday afternoon
nobody watches boxing anymore (i think)
during the Holmes-Cooney fight build up
i tackled a Japanese kid named Satoshi Watanabe
into the wet September Ohio grass
(me thinking I was Lyle Alzado, he thinking he was Brian Sipe)
and then camped out with him in his tent
just outside his house
that Saturday night we watched the heavyweights go at it
and Holmes dispatched of Cooney in 13 rounds
worked him with a left jab into the body
until Cooney’s father stepped in and ended it all
nobody watches boxing anymore
it doesn’t make sense

I like your poem and I like the theory of boxing but it does make some sense: the fighters suck now and the sport is corrupt at the pro level and it isn’t being picked up by young athletes because it is only taught in the poorest of poor urban areas and they all want to play basketball or football. And then there is MMA. I miss Iron Mike circa ’86.

There’s no punctuation so the last two lines are open for interpretation. Maybe boxing itself makes no sense. Or maybe not watching it.
