This is the official declaration from the French government regarding the brilliant writer, thief, playwright, all-around dissenter, Jean Genet. I was given the re-release of Saint Genet by the fine people at The Lit Pub (from U. of MN Press) to read and perhaps review, if I saw fit to it. After 19 months of reading and nearly 30 days of writing about it, here’s the final piece. This wasn’t an easy book for me to get through; somehow Sartre manages to turn this 700-page monster into a mirror, which you constantly hold up. I wasn’t happy with what I was seeing, but neither could I put it down and walk away.
Many thanks to the staff at TLP for waiting while I made my way slowly through this incredible, difficult, but absolutely fascinating work.
