Could It? It could.

6 Jun

My short piece “It Could Be” is now published in Camroc Press Review (here); many thanks to editor Barry Basden for taking this one way back in November of ’11 (sometimes these things take forever to appear–one could be long dead and cold by the time they’re published).   Barry wanted no more than 550 words, so I ended up cutting a large chunk of this piece; originally there was much more dialogue, thus establishing a stronger or, rather, a more developed relationship between the narrator and his toddler daughter. I think the fundamental thread of the relationship is still there even with the edited down to flash piece.

I’m attempting to publish longer pieces now…staying away from flash fiction, despite their popularity with online magazines. In short stories now I’m much more interested in further development…something reaching toward 5,000 words or thereabouts. There are quite a few who take longer, true short stories, but they’re difficult to get in (New Yorker, Paris Review, Guernica, Ploughshares, Zoetrope, Glimmer Train); we’ll see.

As always, thanks for reading. Cheers.

Ouch. So sad and sweet. I shouldn’t have read it today . . . Should have saved it for tomorrow when I have my boys.
